As you may recall, I originally started this blog as a venue for posting information about my program performance in the 2007 Interactive Brokers Olympiad. There were some interested parties and I wanted a record for myself, so I posted daily and included all trades made that year. After I came in 10th place and noticed some heavy traffic on those posts I decided to remove them out of fear someone would copy my strategy and provide more competition in 2008. Well, I still use a similar strategy but I am less concerned with people seeing it now because the 2009 Olympiad is about to begin. Plus I think it might be interesting for others to see some of the problems I was having that year and how they were resolved. Enjoy them while they are up because I can't guarantee that they will remain so. I plan to compete again next year. At any rate, the Olympiad 2007 posts are back up for now:

So that's it. I hope some find this information helpful, I certainly would love to hear about what others have been doing in this competition. A major reason why I am doing this blog is to try and get exchange of ideas and experiences among competitors. So feel free to comment! I won't be posting as extensively as in 2007 but I will do a couple updates per week. So stop by, the game begins on Monday.

Where on the IB website can you update the trading strategy? I can't find any link in the account management for my IB olympiad account.
Hey Baxxor, thanks for stopping by. The deadline to update your strategy was Dec. 31st. Before that you could do it in the account management on the IB website. So I imagine they removed that feature after the deadline but I haven't checked.
If its a big deal I would recommend emailing them immediately. They might be ok with it if you tell them your strategy before the competition starts, but then again maybe not. It's up to them.
Mind if I ask what your strategy is? Even if you don't provide details I'm curious. What equities are you trading and with what kind of frequency?
For some reason, I was under the impression that Dec. 31 was the deadline for entering the competition, but you could alter your strategy during the competition. Since the market is evolving I thought I could change the parameters of my strategy to follow changes in the market. Sucks if you can't. IB doesn't answer email as far as I can tell.
I'm new to all this trading stuff. For the IB olympiad I'm just currency trading - buy low, sell high... :)
Yeah, a friend of mine was confused about this too. The rules say that you can change your code during the competition. As I understand it you can change your parameters as the market evolves so long as its within the general strategy you outlined for IB. For example, if you had some parameter that said buy the S&P 500 when the VIX drops below 20 or something. Then the VIX dropped below 20 and did not rebound, you could alter the number to 15 or something. So your strategy submitted to IB would say something like "I will buy SPY when VIX falls below some value currently set to 20" or something. At least that's my interpretation of it. In my case I use moving averages for one strategy and I may or may not change the longevity of those averages.
That being said, I think this is not an issue you would get disqualified over though. If you said you would be trading currencies with some moving average strategy and that's what you did, then they probably wouldn't even notice (or care) if you change your moving averages or even use some other indicator to trigger buy/sell signals. On the other hand, they might not be happy if you said you were trading currencies and you made a bunch of money buying oil futures after oil collapsed. Of course, I am just speaking from my interpretation of their rules.
Thanks for the information. I just wanted to change the parameters for buying/selling and the amounts of the trades. The currencies and overall strategy would remain as outlined in my original plan. I thought that was ok according to the IB faq since it says you can change your program during the competition.
I hate how the rules are so lacking in specifics of what "changing your program during the competition" allows. Oh well. I'm going to change the parameters and hope for the best.
Good luck!
Well if you get clarity on this please let me know because I'd be interested. IB is not great about responding and I'd say their customer service overall is a bit lacking. But they will definitely get back to you, eventually.
Good luck to you too Baxxor.
I'm at UIUC and in the olympiad too! I've been working on my strategy all Fall. Now I'm programming. Please email me at llamapoop04 (at) gmail.
Hey PD, sweet. I've been hoping to meet more people from the U of I in the competition. I currently only know of two others (not including you). You've got mail!
