Interesting point, but I don't think it's a matter of being honest versus dishonest. It's a matter of the newspapers, at least, making use of every inch of space they have left today. $170,000 million has three extra zeros than $170 billion. ;)
Hey Irish lace, yeah, I think is more of a commentary on the way that the media has focused so much on the 170M in bonuses but mostly ignored the 170 Billion given to AIG by the feds. Its kinda ridiculous because that 170B went to a bunch of other big banks that are paying even bigger bonuses with the money.
And its a comic strip, so its more of a joke than a literal thing..
Thanks for stopping by, I hope to see more comments for you. ;)
I was joking with that comment, btw ... I do realize the purpose of a comic. I was referring more to how reporters today have less space to get their words in print, so use the simplest way. But I interpreted the comic differently in any case: based on how the media is portraying the numbers, it looks like the bonus money was pretty much all the money the Feds gave AIG (i.e. no context for the numbers).
I have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the UIUC. Before that I was at UCSB working on degrees in EE and Physics. I currently do research on an emerging type of photovoltaic based on semiconductor nanocrystals. Investing is one of my hobbies.
